Cookies
One, and only after you have chosen. Here is the working.
There is one cookie
It is called retold_consent. It is set by retold.uk, it is read by nobody else, and it holds one word: whether you accepted or declined the choice offered at the bottom of the page. It lasts six months, after which we ask again.
Nothing is stored before you answer. If you never touch the banner, nothing is written to your browser at all, and declining is treated exactly the same as accepting for the purpose of remembering your answer: we save the word so we stop asking.
That cookie needs no consent of its own. Schedule A1 to the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations exempts storage whose sole purpose is remembering a preference the user expressed, and we use it for nothing else. It is not an identifier, it is not shared, and it cannot be used to recognise you anywhere.
What the choice is actually about
Our films are hosted on YouTube. A YouTube player stores things on your device as soon as it loads, and sets cookies once playback begins. This is true even of the privacy enhanced youtube-nocookie.com domain, which is quieter than the ordinary one but not silent.
So we ask first.
- Accept and a player may load when you press play on a film. Not before. The still image you see until then is served from retold.uk, not from Google.
- Decline and no player is ever loaded on this site. Films become links to YouTube instead, so you can still watch them, you just do it on YouTube's own page where its terms are its own business.
Until you answer, we behave as though you declined. Silence is not agreement.
You can change your mind whenever you like. There is a Cookie choice link in the footer of every page, and it reopens the same two buttons.
What we do not do
There is no analytics of any kind. No Google Analytics, no Meta pixel, no heatmaps, no session recording, no advertising tags. We do not know who you are, how you got here or where you went next, and we have not built anything that could tell us.
Everything else this page needs comes from retold.uk itself. The typefaces are served from our own server rather than from Google Fonts. The images and the video on these pages are our own files. There are no social widgets and no comment systems.
The two buttons are the same size, the same weight and the same colour. That is deliberate. A reject button that is harder to find than the accept button does not collect a real choice, and a choice that is not real is not consent.
What the server records
Our host, Netlify, keeps ordinary server access logs: the IP address a request came from, the browser user agent, the page asked for and the time. This is not a cookie. It is not stored on your device and it is not tied to a profile of you. Every web server on the internet keeps something like it, and it is what allows the site to be served and abuse to be traced.
How that data is handled is covered on the privacy page.
If this ever changes
If we ever want to know how many people read a page, we will use a method that identifies nobody, and we will say so here before we switch it on. This page changes first. The notice arrives with the thing it describes, not after it.
Checking for yourself
You do not have to take our word for it. Open your browser developer tools and look under Application or Storage. Before you answer the banner you will find nothing at all from retold.uk. After you answer you will find one cookie, retold_consent, holding one word.
Asking us about it
Email info@retold.uk. If you think something on this page is wrong, we would genuinely like to know.
